Official falls from balcony to his death after wild monkeys attack

— Wild monkeys attacked a senior government official who then fell from a balcony at his home and died Sunday, media reported.

New Delhi Deputy Mayor S.S. Bajwa was rushed to a hospital after the attack by a gang of Rhesus macaques, but succumbed to head injuries sustained in his fall, the Press Trust of India news agency and The Times of India reported.

Many government buildings, temples and residential neighborhoods in New Delhi are overrun by Rhesus macaques, which scare passers-by and occasionally bite or snatch food from unsuspecting visitors.

Last year, the Delhi High Court reprimanded city authorities for failing to stop the animals from terrifying residents and asked them to find a permanent solution to the monkey menace.

Part of the problem is that devout Hindus believe monkeys are manifestations of the monkey god Hanuman and feed them bananas and peanuts - encouraging them to frequent public places.

Over the years, city authorities have employed monkey catchers who use langurs - a larger and fiercer kind of monkey - to scare or catch the macaques, but the problem persists.

I can't wait for the investigation into a conspiracy theory. I am sure these monkeys were trained by some shadowy gov't agency.

I actually lived in Jaipur, India for about 4 months, which is a few hours from Delhi. The monkeys there can be a little scary. While I was living there we had monkeys raid our fridge three times. That was crazy to see.

I just keep thinking of Apu from the Simpsons saying, "Please do not give my god a peanut."

It's tragic and terrible that the man died, and I'm sure there are many pithy social issues surrounding the health and life quality of these street monkeys.

However, I can't stop snickering long enough to consider any of that, so I'll just say "Hee! Wild monkey attack!"

no, up0on investigation, it will be discovered that they were Halliburton trained and programmed monkeys, part of another secret project of the bush admin to steal rights from people and trample the constitution, while looking silly doing it.

surprised we haven't seen a bush conspiracy theory yet.

hey, send these monkeys into the Pak frontier trained with pictures of Bin Laden in their minds? that'd be pretty cool...new reality show: secret killer trained monkeys!

"But, to answer the big "Q" of the day..."

Ok, I'll ask... what do you do with a bad monkey?

  26. GretchenJP (anonymous) says…

    See no evil

  27. bearded_gnome (anonymous) says…

obviously: what do you do with a bad monkey...anything he wants...or its death!

still think the monkeys were very thoughtful to take him to the hospital after they attacked him...monkeys with conscience/trying to make it right...give them a break! these monkeys show evidence of being capable of reform...they just need "scared straight" for monkeys.

I'm quite proud of my fellow ljw posters on this award-winning board, when I saw this, I just knew it was for us. 40posts. and no monkeyshine.
