The Hunted

When Lawrence and Free State tangle in football Friday night at Haskell Stadium, the two most hunted players will probably be Tyler Hunt and Chucky Hunter.

Hunter leads the Firebirds in rushing with 840 yards, while Hunt is the Lions’ leading ground-gainer with 641 yards. Hunter has also scored a Sunflower League-high 15 touchdowns.

Hall of Famer

Lawrence High girls basketball coach Kristin Mallory will be inducted into the Ottawa University Hall of Fame at a ceremony Friday.

Mallory, who played at OU from 1988-1992, will join her father, Leonard Scheusler, in the OU Hall of Fame. Scheusler was an All-American football player for the Braves in the 1970s.

“It is a great honor,” Mallory said. “I am thrilled. It’s something I’m really excited to be a part of, especially since I’m joining my dad.”

In addition to playing at OU for four years, Mallory was an assistant coach with the Ottawa women’s basketball program from 1992-1994.

Glatz Gets Goal

FSHS senior soccer defender Greg Glatz netted his first goal of the season last week against Shawnee Mission Northwest.

It was a rare opportunity for the defensive-minded Glatz, who had what he thought was a goal called back early in the season at SM South. “I was ecstatic,” Glatz said of finally scoring.

Cross Country Conundrum

The Sunflower League cross country race was washed out Saturday and postponed until Monday, leaving runners with two extra days to think, or not think, about the race.

LHS senior Kelly Renfro said she tried not to think about it Saturday and Sunday.

“I went on a couple of runs, but I really didn’t think about it that much because I knew that would make it even worse.”

Lions’ sophomore Roy Wedge said he focused on things other than running.

“I kept my mind off it,” he said. “I played video games.”

The Firebirds’ Logan Sloan said he didn’t think about the race until Monday morning.

“I just did what I would do on a normal weekend,” the freshman said.

Whatever the case, it seemed to work out, as each won a medal at the Sunflower League meet. Renfro finished 10th, while Wedge and Sloan placed 8th and 9th, respectively.

Persistence Pays Off

Entering Friday night’s district game against Washburn Rural, LHS running back Clifton Sims had caught more touchdown passes (one) than he had rushed for (none). Sims carried the ball 75 times this season with no scores before taking on the Junior Blues.

On Sims’ seventh carry of the game, he finally found the end zone on first and goal from the one-yard-line, giving Sims his first rushing touchdown in 82 carries. The score gave the Lions a 13-0 lead en route to a 28-6 victory.
