Drive into a tornado? Sure, dude!

The Discovery Channel has found big audiences with series like “Deadliest Catch,” showing tough guys doing hard work for our entertainment. “Storm Chasers” (9 p.m., Discovery) expands the genre with a show about scientists and filmmakers who drive right into the path of tornadoes to capture unprecedented footage and discover the secrets of deadly storms.

And no basic-cable manly-man show would be complete without a tip of the backward baseball cap to “Monster Garage.” “Chasers” kicks off with clips of filmmaker and twister buff Sean Casey tricking out his special Tornado Intercept Vehicle, or TIV. He takes a Ford 450 pickup truck and adds an even more powerful engine. Then he covers it with thousands of pounds of steel plate so the truck resembles a small tank or armored personnel carrier. He adds windows made of bulletproof glass and fits the contraption with a turret to hold a special IMAX camera. Sean plans to barrel the TIV right into the center of a twister and get the movie of a lifetime.

¢ Olive (Kristin Chenoweth) burst into song on last week’s episode of “Pushing Daisies” (7 p.m., ABC). Does that mean this is a musical now? Or was her rendition of “Hopelessly Devoted” just a cute, campy throwaway element in a show filled with precious, affected moments? OK, the scenes set in the dandelion hybrid-car showroom reflected ingenious art direction. But if I want to see a clever celebration of style over substance, I can watch a Target ad.
