Baker, Haskell seeking road victories

Baker University will be looking for its first football road victory today. Meanwhile, road-weary Haskell Indian Nations University will be seeking its first victory, period.

Baker (3-3), coming off a thrilling 15-13 victory over William Jewell, will travel to Springfield, Mo., to tangle with Evangel College. Haskell (0-5) will be at McPherson College.

Kickoff for both games will be 1:30 p.m.

A school-record five field goals, including a 62-yarder with 39 seconds left, by Derek Doerfler, enabled Baker to remain unbeaten at home last week, but the Wildcats still haven’t won on the road.

“It was nice to see Derek have a career day at Liston Stadium,” BU coach Mike Grossner said, “but we need to finish some of these trips in the red zone with seven points.”

Evangel (4-2) is ranked No. 28 in the NAIA and coming off a 41-20 victory over Avila. Evangel blanked Baker, 24-0, last year in Baldwin City.

Haskell is coming off one of its worst losses of the season – a 47-14 thumping by Bacone in Muskogee, Okla. The Fightin’ Indians managed only 95 yards of offense while surrendering 519 yards to the Warriors.

McPherson (1-4) has lost two games by five points or less. The Bulldogs’ lone victory was a 33-21 decision over St. Mary College of Leavenworth.

McPherson and Haskell haven’t played since the 2004 season. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series, 3-1.

After four straight road games, the Indians finally will return home next Saturday for a homecoming clash with Southwestern Assemblies of God U. Baker also will be home that day against Central Methodist.
