The national jobless rate topped 10 percent for the first time since 1940. In Lawrence, however, the latest rate was listed at 4.6 percent and it was not expected to rise during October. Statewide, the unemployment rate was about 6 percent.
The head of the state’s new task force on high-technology industry said Lawrence was among the cities crucial to attracting such industries to Kansas. Former Sen. James B. Pearson had been appointed to the post by Gov. John Carlin and Pearson said he hoped to form a bipartisan committee to focus on attracting scientific firms to the Sunflower State.
It appeared KU would lose money on the recent visit of comedian Bob Hope to the campus. The cost was $45,000, the crowd for the Saturday night show was only 5,200 and it appeared the final ink would be red for KU.
