Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Oct. 7, 1907: “Officers of the U.S. Navy have organized to get pay and benefit increases and a strong lobbying effort is due in Congress. Other armed forces units are due to support the Navy group, which has a number of Kansans involved. : One of the arguments against having the Kansas-Missouri football game here on Thanksgiving is that Missouri students who come here the night before the game might be mistreated by the citizens. We do not see any problems and hope the game comes here after 16 years in Kansas City. But we do hope the town behaves well if the game is here. : Prof. Hubach, head of the voice culture department at the university, has organized the Vesper Chorus on a larger basis than ever before and on the last Sunday before Christmas the group will perform Handel’s ‘The Messiah.’ It is expected to be a major event. : The university football team has ‘never been in finer shape’ and coach Bert Kennedy says his team is ready to try out the opposition, with the William Jewell game opening the season.”
