Wildcats, Indians hit field

Baker University’s football team is unbeaten at home, but winless on the road. Meanwhile, Haskell Indian Nations University will settle for a victory anywhere.

Baker (2-3) will play host to William Jewell in its homecoming game today in Baldwin City. Kickoff will be at 2 p.m. at Liston Stadium.

Haskell (0-4) will make its third straight road trip when the Fightin’ Indians travel to Muskogee, Okla., to meet Bacone. Kickoff will be at 2 p.m. today at the Indian Bowl.

Baker is coming off a 23-15 loss to No. 16-ranked Graceland in Lamoni, Iowa. In that game, linebacker Spencer Curran recorded a career-high 20 tackles.

William Jewell (3-2) snapped a two-game skid last week with a 41-19 victory over Avila as quarterback Benny Palmer threw seven touchdown passes and no interceptions. Baker edged Jewell, 27-24, last year in Liberty, Mo., for its first victory over the Cardinals since 2000.

Six former BU sports standouts – Scott Bates, Gary Bates, Jeff Johnson, Chris Orel, John Smith and Nate Houser – will be recognized at halftime of today’s game. Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy, a 1987 graduate, will be inducted into Baker’s Hall of Fame on Oct. 20.

Haskell, held to only 10 points in its first three losses, doubled that scoring output last week, but bowed to Lincoln University, 39-20, in Jefferson City, Mo. On the same day, Peru State blanked Bacone, 30-0.

Haskell’s last victory was against Bacone, a 16-10 decision in the 2006 season finale at Haskell Stadium.
