Seabury’s Sutherland wins tennis regional

? Seabury senior Brooke Sutherland stormed to victory at the Class 1-2-3A regional tennis tournament on Thursday at Indian Creek Recreation Center.

Sutherland defeated Cooper of Sabetha, 6-1, 6-0; Mower of Maranatha, 6-0, 6-0, and Alholm of K.C. Christian in the final, 6-3, 6-3.

Gabrielle Dillon injured her ankle while leading 2-1 in her first match and withdrew from the competition.

The doubles team of Leah Tomassian and Jennifer Hughes went 1-1. The team defeated Pol-Howard of Maur Hill, 6-2, 6-2, then lost to Sunderland-Kahler, of Kansas City Christian, 7-5, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.

Sara King and Libby Sutherland lost, 6-1, 6-1, to Wallace-Lafsler of Maranatha.

“I thought Brooke fought very hard to be able to come out on top,” coach Scott Elwell said. “It’s difficult in these tournaments where you have to play a lot of matches over the course of a full day. There were ups and downs for sure. Having Gabrielle having to pull out in singles was tough. I think she had a chance to do well if she hadn’t become injured. Our doubles teams played well. We’re excited about moving forward with Brooke on Saturday (at sub-state in Neodesha).”

Sutherland is 14-0 on the season.
