Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Oct. 5, 1907: “One of Baldwin’s most interesting settlers is R.W. Bailey, who runs a shoe shop on East High Street. He opened his business 30 years ago and in that time has not missed one work day at his bench due to sickness. It is a remarkable record by a man many admire. : Many seem excited about the state meeting of some 200 photographers here next week. They anticipate stimulating photo displays. : Lawrence is trying to be the host for the Kansas-Missouri football game on Thanksgiving now that it will not be in Kansas City and now Leavenworth has joined Lawrence and Joplin in trying to get the relocated event. Unofficially, our university people say the game will be here or nowhere. : A number of local doctors say that if people drank more water and took in less patent medicines and supposed cure-alls they would be far better off. The water supply seems to be safe now after a period of pollution that led health officials to take action.”
