Rallyball gets demonstration

The Lawrence Tennis Association took a step towards bringing one of its most accessible games to kids across the Lawrence school district.

On Wednesday LTA director Fernando Zuna and coach Kirstey Elliott demonstrated the fun and physical activity of rallyball — a tennis-like sport on a smaller court with a larger foam ball in place of a regular tennis ball — to elementary physical education instructors at Cordley Elementary.

“The kids and I have been looking forward to demonstrating some tennis teaching techniques to the physical education teachers,” Elliott said. “You could see the pride in the kids as they performed tennis skills for their PE teachers. All the kids are students in the district.”

Those kids were Andie and Mason Veeder, Liam Elliott, Finn Dobbs and Seamus Sarin, who eagerly helped show the fun involved in the game they’ve been playing for quite some time.

“We had a great representation of ages and I think that made for a great demonstration for the PE teachers.”

After the kids helped show the details of the game, it was the teachers’ turn.

“Fernando and I didn’t have to ask twice for teachers to participate in the demonstration,” Elliott said. “You could tell by the laughs and comments everyone was having a great time.”

At the end of the 20-minute demonstration the comments from the teachers was that “This was a skill to teach students and they can take home and play with mom and dad,” Elliott said. “That is exactly what Fernando and I wanted to achieve.
