From the Lawrence Daily World for Oct. 4, 1907: “Testimony is being given in New York by people who contend that Standard Oil activity was designed to put them out of business. One of the witnesses is W.W. Tarbell of Philadelphia, a brother of Ida Tarbell who first exposed the Standard Oil methods. : President Roosevelt is in Memphis for a meeting of the Inland Deep Waterways group designed to make best use of our water resources. The president is noted as a conservationist and has a personal interest in the Memphis meeting. : The local ministerial alliance is planning an outstanding lecture and arts course this year and the first event will be on Oct. 14 when the Lyceum Grand Concert Co. will visit. : Attorneys for the late L.H. Perkins are suing insurance firms for more than $75,000 because they figured in exhuming Perkins’ body to see if his death was an accident or suicide. The action came as a big surprise to many since it appeared the matter had been settled. : A local man was fined $1 and costs in court after killing a dog which he said had been killing his chickens.”
