Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Oct. 2, 1907: “It is actually embarrassing the way money accumulates in Kansas. In the past year the uninvested bank deposits of the state have increased $20 million. But it is a good embarrassment to have, considering the well-being in our state. : The September weather report from Dr. Snow at the university says temperatures were about normal but rainfall was painfully scanty. For the year, however, moisture is about normal. : Courtship by mail when the courtee accepts money from the courter and then leaves him waiting at the church drew a penalty in DeSoto today. It seems a man sent a woman $55 and she failed to show up as planned. She now is in jail and is supposed to pay back the money she got under fraudulent conditions. : Local churches are planning a huge revival to begin Oct. 15 and number of top speakers are due to come here for the event. : The big whistle at the university has ceased to bring terror to the hearts of youngsters since no effort is being made to enforce our curfew ordinance. Too many boys have remained on the streets of late.”
