You’ll have a little less time next month to work off the holiday turkey and yams at the three city-operated recreation centers.

The city’s Parks and Recreation Department announced Thursday that it is cutting the hours of operation at recreation centers from Sunday to Jan. 5.

The new hours for that time period: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday; noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays; and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The change in hours will affect the Community Building, 115 W. 11th St.; the East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St.; and the Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St.

Ernie Shaw, acting director of the parks and recreation department, said the reduction in hours mainly was the result of the department’s basketball league wrapping up for the year. Usually, there are games running until 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. at the centers. But as the season comes to a close, games are ending at 8 p.m.

But Shaw said the move was budget-related as well.

“That wasn’t the main reason, but it helps a little bit,” Shaw said. “But we have the money to operate.”

The holiday hours will result in about nine fewer hours per week that the centers are open. Generally, the centers are open until at least 9 p.m. on weekdays, until 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The centers also open at 10 a.m. on Saturdays.

Shaw said that new basketball leagues begin in early January and that all the recreation centers would return to normal operating hours Jan. 6.
