Roberts: God forced resignation from ORU

November 29, 2007

— Richard Roberts told students at Oral Roberts University on Wednesday that he did not want to resign as president of the scandal-plagued evangelical school but did so because God insisted.

God told him on Thanksgiving that he should resign the next day, Roberts told students in the university's chapel.

"Every ounce of my flesh said 'no'" to the idea, Roberts said, but he prayed over the decision with his wife and his father, Oral Roberts, and decided to step down.

Roberts said he wanted to "strike out" against the people who were persecuting him, and considered countersuing, but "the Lord said, 'don't do that,'" he said.

After submitting his resignation, he said, for the "first time in 60 days peace came into my heart."

Roberts spoke for only a few minutes and was applauded and cheered by students. He wiped away tears with a white handkerchief and his hands.

"This has nearly destroyed my family, and it's nearly destroyed ORU," Roberts said.

A lawsuit accuses Roberts of lavish spending at a time when the university faced more than $50 million in debt, including taking shopping sprees, buying a stable of horses and paying for a daughter to travel to the Bahamas aboard the university jet.

People who hear voices in their head and base their actions on what the voices tell them to do are in need of medical treatment. This is true even when that voice is coming from "God."

I'm glad Roberts stepped down. Now he can seek the medical attention he obviously needs.

"::S-P's are virtual socialists who are hostile to Christianity and traditional American values::"

Good work on omitting the first word of that sentence.

"[Bill] O'Reilly's S-P's are virtual socialists who are hostile to Christianity and traditional American values."

Fundamentalist Christianity is hostile to traditional American values.

God told me, just a moment ago, that he never once spoke to anyone from the Roberts family. So, either Richard Roberts is a big fat liar, or God is. Are you calling God a liar?

"Christians should mind their own business and non-Christians the same and we all get along just fine."

Were it not for the tax-free status given these con men, I'd be more than happy to simply mind my own.

"I have my own personal take on God and Christianity-my biggest anti-social trait:..too bad so many have given it a bad rap like this. It should not be a business, a social event or a way to rip people off. Christians should mind their own business and non-Christians the same and we all get along just fine. "

R_T, that's the most lucid and agreeable statement I think I've ever seen from you. I wholeheartedly agree!

"To that I have to ask: If saying that "God told me to" is equivalent to "an emotion caused them to make a decision", then wouldn't my emotions making a decision be equal to God telling me to do something?

Can you see how this quickly becomes problematic?"

Absolutely, scene. Abso-frickin'-lutely.

people who claim God talked to them should be more careful in waving it around. most often people who say that do so from personal motivation. God hates false prophets and His judgment for them is very serious. these fools so lightly throw that around and yet earn a very serious judgment.

glad roberts is out, but he exemplifies what's wrong with the carismatics today, bringing shame to the name of Christ.

RT, 1 corinthians says tongues [the gift of] is given, not as a sign to those who already believe, but as a sign to those who do not yet believe. if people who cling to the "tongues" gift also submit to the restrictions in 1 corinthians 14, 99.9% of what's called "tongues" in this country would never occur. also, every time that gift is displayed in the new testament, somebody understood what was said. acts2 tongues refers to simultaneous translation, not a noise from one person.

A fool and his money are soon parted, this is for all you folks who give away your hard earned money to just any organization. The Roberts have been making big promises for years but as with most of these TV preachers the only ones getting "blessed" are people like the Roberts who know how to separate desperate or simple folks from their cash. It is a sad thing!

The prosperity gospel, which measures blessings in material terms, has its obvious end in scandals like this and the PTL / Swaggert thing 20+ years ago. Mega-church pastor Rick Warren has a term for this kind of idea, expressed in a frequently quoted comment: "Baloney."

actually, scenic-booter, many blacks speak in tongues too, but in your uneducated stereotyped liberal haze you wouldn't know that. still disagree with the practice, but it isn't limited to agro-=americans=rednecks.

well said Purplesage! cool screne name too.

the nymrod in this article, his papa once announced to his tv-flock that God would take his life if he didn't raise a certain amount of money...despicable! there is special punishment in He|| reserved for these creeps.
