Officers and 14 directors for the new University State Bank were elected at an organizational stockholders meeting. Ben Barteldes was chosen chairman of the board, and Kenn Ragland was named president. Harold Sweeney was vice president and John Brand Jr. secretary. USB was to be the fourth bank in Lawrence, and president Ragland announced that the institution was capitalized at $654,000 with more than 150 local stockholders.
