Berdene “Birdie” Hird, Lawrence, will celebrate her 80th birthday on Thursday, and her friends and family are having a card shower to mark the occasion.

Katie Schaetzel, Lawrence, has been nominated to attend the U.S. Naval Academy by U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan. Schaetzel must meet the admission requirements of the academy, which will make the final decision on admission.

Pete Anderson, Lawrence, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Tour Association at its recent annual convention in Kansas City, Mo.

The award is given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the association and its members and demonstrated a strong commitment to the mission of the association and the travel industry.

Anderson served as national president of the association in 1988. He began working at Maupintour Inc. in 1964 and retired in 1999.

Dominique Duncan attended the Third International Workshop on Seizure Prediction in Epilepsy, conducted Sept. 29-Oct. 2 in Freiburg, Germany.

Duncan was one of eight investigators from the United States who were selected for travel and accommodation support by the National Institutes of Health.

She is a first-year Engineering Faculty Fellow and doctoral student at Yale University. She is a 2007 graduate of the University of Chicago in mathematics, Slavic languages and literature with honors and a minor in computational neuroscience.

Duncan is a 2003 graduate of Free State High School.

The Wakarusa Valley Chess Tournament was conducted Nov. 10 at Wakarusa Valley School. Southwest Junior High School won first place in the K-8 division, and Wakarusa Valley and Cordley schools claimed second- and third-place, respectively, in K-6. Individually, SWJH’s Luke Lesslie and Wakarusa Valley’s Robert Newman earned second-place medals in K-8 and K-6, respectively.

Luke Wempe finished seventh overall at the 34th Junior Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest, conducted Nov. 14-15 in Louisville, Ky. There were 112 individual contestants.

Wempe is a 2006 graduate of Lawrence High School. He now attends Seward County Community College.

Roy Wedge, a student at Lawrence High School, won the 22nd place trophy in the K-12 division of the National Youth Action championship chess tournament, conducted Nov. 17-18 in St. Louis. Wedge had five victories and one draw out of nine matches in a tournament that attracted nearly 500 players from 33 states and Puerto Rico.

Colin Bradt, a student at Cordley School, won a second-place class trophy for having the second best score in the K-3 section for a player rated below 400 in the U.S. Chess Federation. He had five wins out of nine matches.

Cordley placed 16th in the K-6 division team competition, thanks to the efforts of Roscoe Bradt, McCarthy Fitch, George Wedge and Eddie Wilson. Wilson led the team in scoring with five victories.

Two third-year law students at Kansas University won first place in the national moot court competition at the 19th annual National Criminal Procedure Tournament, conducted Oct. 18-20 in San Diego.

Luke P. Sinclair of Lawrence and Milwaukee, Wis., and David Clay Britton of Olathe competed against 40 other teams from law schools throughout the United States.

Sinclair and Britton also won for best brief, and Britton was named second-place oralist out of 82 competitors.

This is the first time a KU team has won the National Criminal Procedure Tournament.
