Americans gobbling turkey, taters by the ton

A look at Thanksgiving by the numbers, with data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau:

¢ 272 million – Estimated number of turkeys that will be raised in the United States in 2007, up 4 percent since last year.

¢ 1.6 billion – Weight, in pounds, of sweet potatoes produced in the United States in 2006.

¢ 1 billion – Weight, in pounds, of pumpkins produced in the United States in 2007.

¢ 841,000 tons – Weight, in tons, of green beans produced in the United States.

¢ 13.1 pounds – Amount, in pounds, of turkey eaten by the average American in 2005.

¢ 4.5 pounds – Amount, in pounds, of sweet potatoes the average American ate in 2005.

¢ $4.9 million – Trade deficit the U.S. faced for live turkeys during the first half of 2007. However, it has a $9.4 million trade surplus in cranberries and a $15.3 million surplus in sweet potatoes.

¢ $3.6 billion – Value of turkeys shipped in the United States in 2002 (Arkansas led the way with $581.5 million).

¢ 3 – Cities in the United States named after turkeys. They are Turkey, Texas, Turkey Creek, La., and Turkey, N.C. There are three townships in Kansas named after turkeys.
