With bright lights and applause, Janice Marie Tennant was crowned Miss Lawrence-KU of 1982. She was a Kansas University junior studying communications and advertising and was chosen from a field of 10 finalists when the contest was revived after lapsing since 1976. Her hometown was Stafford.

Locally, interest rate changes had caused many mortgagees to reconsider refinancing, but officials pointed out there were many stipulations to consider before leaping into such a complicated fray.

Creation of a Kansas University School of Business scholarship to honor the late Odd Williams was announced by officers and directors of the Douglas County Bank. Williams was a widely known Lawrence businessman, banker and political figure who had died unexpectedly of a heart attack on Nov. 12 at the age of 56. He was a highly respected 1949 graduate of the school of business and had been a director and founder of the bank.
