A man who allegedly solicited sex over the Internet with a 13-year-old girl will be tried on sex crime charges, a Douglas County judge ruled on Wednesday.

The ruling came a day after a Baldwin City policewoman testified that a 38-year-old Carbondale man solicited the girl in an online chat room. The policewoman was working undercover on the Internet, posing as that girl. The man also requested that the girl bring a 12-year-old friend along for a sexual rendezvous.

The suspect, who was arrested by Baldwin police on Nov. 2, is charged with attempted rape, attempted aggravated sodomy and electronic solicitation of a child. Judge Robert Fairchild set his trial for Feb. 19.

The Journal-World does not generally print the names of sex crime suspects unless they are convicted.

The suspect is being held in the Douglas County Jail on $80,000 bond. His attorney, Sally Pokorny, asked the judge to reduce that bond. The judge declined the request.
