Top 25 Roundup: No. 6 Louisville trounces overmatched Hartford

? Terrence Williams recorded the third triple-double in Louisville history with 14 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds, and the sixth-ranked Cardinals rolled by Hartford 104-69 in their season-opener Saturday.

Louisville set a school record with 22 3-pointers, burying the overmatched Hawks (1-3) under a barrage of jumpers. Andre McGee led the way, scoring a career-high 18 points – all on 3-pointers. Jerry Smith added 14 points and Earl Clark chipped in with 10 points and 11 rebounds for Louisville.

The Cardinals shot 55 percent from the field, including 63 percent from 3-point range.

Joe Zeglinski led Hartford with 13 points and the undersized Hawks tried to use a zone against the bigger Cardinals.

No. 14 Gonzaga 84, UC Riverside 48

Spokane, Wash. – Freshman Austin Daye scored 16 points to lead four players into double figures and Gonzaga routed UC Riverside.

Jeremy Pargo and Abdullahi Kuso each added 13 points and Robert Sacre 12 to help Gonzaga (3-0) post its third blowout win in a row. The Zags are holding opponents to an average of 48 points.

Larry Cunningham led UC Riverside (0-4) with 11 points. Sean Cunningham and Severin Gates added nine points each.

Siena 79, No. 20 Stanford 67

Albany, N.Y. – Josh Duell scored 16 points to lead Siena to a win reminiscent of the Saints’ stunning victory over Stanford in the 1989 NCAA tournament.

Alex Franklin had 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds for Siena, and Kenny Hasbrouck added 12 points in a rare meeting between the teams. In 1989, a 14th-seeded Siena squad knocked No. 3-seed Stanford out of the NCAA tournament in the first round with an 80-78 win.

Edwin Ubiles scored 11 points for the Saints (2-2). Trailing by one midway through the second half, Siena broke the game open with an 11-0 run, including three straight 3-pointers, two by Duell and the other from Tay Fisher to make it 56-46.

Kenny Brown had 12 points for Stanford (4-1). Lawrence Hill scored 11 points, while Robin Lopez had eight points and 11 rebounds.

No. 23 Southern Illinois 88, Northern Illinois 68

Carbondale, Ill. – Bryan Mullins scored 15 of his 16 points in the first half to help Southern Illinois rout Northern Illinois in the Salukis’ season opener.

Matt Shaw added 16 points and Brandon Wood had 15, keeping Northern Illinois winless (0-4) while dropping the Mid-America Conference’s Huskies to 2-25 against teams ranked in the AP’s Top 25.

Jarvis Nichols had 18 points for Northern Illinois, which trailed 43-21 at the half and saw its deficit balloon to as much as 31 points in the second half.

Ryan Paradise and Cody Yelder each added nine points for the Huskies.

No. 25 Butler 60, Evansville 47

Evansville, Ind. – A.J. Graves scored 22 points to lead Butler over Evansville.

Butler held a 35-32 early in the second half when senior forward Drew Streicher hit a 3-pointer that Graves followed with another 3 after an Evansville turnover.

That gave the Bulldogs (3-0) a 41-32 lead with 14:03 left. The Aces came no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Evansville was led by junior guard Jason Holsinger, who had 16 points, four rebounds and four assists. Redshirt freshman Pieter van Tongeren added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.

No. 11 Oregon 85, Portland 61

Portland, Ore. – After a rather weak first half against Portland, the No. 11 Oregon Ducks settled into their first road game and kept their young season perfect.

Malik Hairston scored 24 points and the Ducks beat the Pilots 85-61 on Saturday night.

Virginia 75, Arizona 72

Tucson, Ariz. – Sean Singletary scored 24 points to lead Virginia to a 75-72 victory over No. 17 Arizona on Saturday night.

Singletary, a three-year captain, made two free throws with 1:22 remaining to break a 69-69 tie, then hit a 15-foot jumper to put the Cavaliers up 73-69 with 39 seconds to go.

Virginia (3-0) knocked off a ranked opponent on the road for the second straight season. The Cavaliers lost to Arizona 81-51 on the same floor two years ago in coach Dave Leitao’s third game.

Jeff Jones hit five 3-pointers to score 15 points for the Cavaliers, who were 12-for-21 (57.1 percent) from beyond the arc.

Jerryd Bayless led Arizona with 21 points in his second college game.
