Olathe ? Malnourished 3-week old twins were found Friday under a bed in the same apartment where the remains of a decomposing woman were discovered, authorities said.

Both babies were taken to a hospital, where one of the twins later died.

Medical crews discovered the dead woman and the babies – a boy and a girl – after a neighbor smelled a foul odor coming from the apartment and called police.

Olathe Police Sgt. Jack Fahrnow would not say whether there were signs of foul play.

Authorities also would not say whether the dead woman was the twins’ mother. But Betsy Clayton, a nearby resident, said she sometimes talked to the woman, who had appeared pregnant about a month ago.

“It’s kind of scary,” said Clayton, who also had seen the woman with toddler-age children.
