Big 12 Roundup: Baylor turns back Shockers, 64-55

? Curtis Jerrells scored 23 points to lead Baylor to a 64-55 victory over Wichita State on Friday night in the first round of the Paradise Jam.

Jerrells, who went 5-of-8 from 3-point range, gave the Bears a 30-28 lead with a shot from well behind the arc in the first half and Baylor (2-0) did not trail the rest of the way.

Jerrells added eight rebounds and four assists. Aaron Bruce scored 10 for the Bears and Kevin Rogers added seven.

Wichita State (1-1) held the lead through most of the opening 20 minutes but gave up nine unanswered points to close the first half, beginning with the long 3-pointer by Jerrells. They trailed 36-28 at halftime.

The Shockers trailed by as much as 13 before mounting a comeback attempt led by Phillip Thomasson, who scored eight of his 12 points in the second half.

No. 16 Texas 73, UC Davis 42

Austin, Texas – A.J. Abrams scored 21 points, and Texas coasted past UC Davis, which is playing its first season as a full-fledged Division I program.

Abrams, who was scoreless in the first half of Texas’ season-opener three days earlier, found his 3-point shooting touch early and had 12 points by halftime for the Longhorns (2-0).

Missouri 95, Southern 50

Columbia, Mo. – DeMarre Carroll had 18 points and nine rebounds as Missouri beat Southern.

For the second straight game, Missouri went to halftime with a 30-point lead, but there was no second-half letdown this time.

Carroll also had nine rebounds for Missouri (3-0), and Keon Lawrence added 14 points and four assists.

Missouri led Fordham 53-23 at halftime earlier this week but shot just 34 percent in the second half of a 79-55 victory.

Oklahoma 69, Gardner-Webb 55

New York – Freshman Blake Griffin led a balanced Oklahoma offense with 17 points, and the Sooners overcame poor shooting and defensive lapses to beat Gardner-Webb in the third-place game of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic.

Longar Longar had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Sooners (4-1), who led 24-22 at halftime and by four with 5:27 left before slowly pulling away. Tony Crocker added 11 points.

Colorado 58, Savannah State 43

Madison, Wis. – Richard Roby scored 17 points as Colorado beat Savannah State in the America’s Youth Classic tournament on Friday.

Roby was 6-for-9 from the field for Colorado (2-1).
