Capt. Richard Stanwix, a veteran of 15 years on the Lawrence police force, was named acting chief by City Manager Ray Wells. Chief William Troelstrup was leaving for a Florida post.

The United Fund campaign total continued to soar past its quota of $104,000 and the surplus was now exceeding $14,000. It was easily the most successful effort of its kind in city history.
