Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 12, 1907: “The severe cold wave that hit Topeka yesterday brought with it a dearth in the supply of natural gas. With the mercury well below the freezing point, it was discovered that gas pressure was so low that flames were even insufficient for cooking, let alone heating. : From Topeka comes word that Kansas butchers who do not take the new pure food laws seriously are in for trouble. Arrests are in order for the so-called “hamburger embalmers” who indulge in dangerous practices turning out bad food.”
