Omon sets mark
Maryville, Mo. ? One-time Lawrence resident Xavier Omon became the first player in NCAA history to rush for 1,500 yards in four seasons Saturday in Northwest Missouri State’s 49-14 victory against Missouri Southern.
“That’s incredible. It says so much about him and his durability,” Bearcats coach Mel Tjeerdsma said. “It is a tremendous accomplishment, and I’m really thrilled for him. He’s really worked hard, and it’s very deserving.”
Omon carried 16 times for 83 yards and scored two touchdowns. It was the first time he has failed to reach 100 yards in 15 games. His final carry came with more than six minutes remaining in the third quarter.
He lived in Lawrence through the eighth grade and is on course to complete a broadcasting degree.
