Parents of teen killed in accident press for tougher driving laws

? Dennis Bixby, whose 19-year-old daughter, Amanda, was killed in a car accident in Leavenworth County, will continue his campaign for tougher vehicular homicide laws Friday in Topeka.

Bixby, a Tonganoxie resident, is expected to speak during a joint judiciary committee work session at the Statehouse.

His daughter’s death in an accident on Feb. 14 also made news on the federal level Tuesday.

U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda, D-Kan., speaking at a news conference in support of a new bipartisan immigration bill, spoke about parents she knew whose only daughter was killed in an accident involving an illegal immigrant.

Dennis Bixby said Wednesday that Boyda was referring to him and his wife, Denise. He said Boyda met with the Bixbys about three weeks ago to discuss her plans for immigration reform.

An online story about the news conference at humanevents.com said Boyda “told the story of friends whose only daughter was killed by an illegal alien in a drunk driving accident.”

Although the driver who caused the accident, Ricardo Flores, 21, is an illegal immigrant, he was not found to be intoxicated.

In September, a Leavenworth County District Court judge ordered Flores to pay nearly $230 in court costs. He is not allowed to drive, and if he is caught driving, he must serve six months in jail.
