5 ways to get your kids moving

Yep. Kids today are more overweight than ever. They eat junk, don’t exercise as much as they should, blah, blah, blah.

Today, though, we’re not going to be the harbinger of bad news. No, we’re offering suggestions to get kids moving. They’re courtesy of Jonathan and Jenna Cooley, owners of My Gym Children’s Fitness Center in Colleyville, Texas, for infants to 13-year-olds.

Added benefit: These are likely to get Mom and Dad moving, too.

1. Walk the walk: C’mon. Is school really that far away? You could walk there with your child and then meet him when the last bell rings. It’s a great way to talk about what’s coming up and what happened during the day.

2. A sight for sore eyes: Folding clothes, taking out the trash or cutting flowers may not seem like the most calorie-burning activities, but every little bit helps. Plus, you’re doing it together. And who couldn’t use an extra pair of hands?

3. Dog-tired: Or the dog will be tired after your kid, with or without you, walks Fluffy around the block. This is good bonding time for child and pet.

4. Power in numbers: Surely yours isn’t the only kiddo on the block. Find out who’s around and meet at the park or in someone’s yard.

5. The play’s the thing: Sure, you could watch “Gilligan’s Island” reruns together. But you also could go outside and shoot hoops or kick a soccer ball.
