Lawrence police still are trying to determine who fired a gunshot early Sunday morning that wounded a man outside AllStars, a North Lawrence strip club.

But police did make an arrest after they arrived at the club, 913 N. Second St., where several people were fighting in the parking lot.

Anthony L. Kennon, 26, Lawrence, was taken to Douglas County Jail for threatening another man with an SKS assault rifle, according to information in Douglas County District Court. Kennon was charged Monday with one count of aggravated assault.

Judge Pro Tem Peggy Kittle set Kennon's bail at $4,000. He is to appear in court again at 9:30 a.m. today. If convicted, he could be sentenced to a maximum of 34 months in prison.

The shooting victim, a 32-year-old Weatherby, Mo., man, was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg and then released.

Lawrence police spokesman Sgt. Paul Fellers said the shooting still is under investigation.

Who the hell hunts with an SKS? Figures some dumb brother would have a piece of crap SKS in the trunk of his $400 1982 Cadillac that's in his baby's mama name! And the shooter description was a "black guy in a hooded coat" LMFAO, that narrows it down to about 99% of them. Let me guess, the coat was 4 sizes too big and his pants were around his knees?

I just saw Anthony hours before this happening. He was a drunk mess talking about some textbook he had to pay for in high school. He has no common sense. He should be locked up and the key thrown away.

Doesn't matter what was used. I wish Anthony was locked up and never let out after seeing the hell he has put people through. If only the cops would catch on that he's one of the biggest problems in Lawrence, especially when it comes to drugs. Getting caught driving back from Mississippi with pounds of marijuana in the trunk of his car and letting his girlfriend take the fall for it and deal with the consequences is pathetic. He's the epitome of trash in Lawrence and needs to go.

I talked to a buddy who said that the SKS was in the trunk of Kennons friends car. I do not think that the police think that this was the gun in the shooting or the shooter. I was told that this was a seporate altercation that occured after the shooting and that it happen as they were tring to leave the bar. The shooter was described as a Black male in a hooded coat.

Oh, the SKS, was the only rifle that was found at WACO, back in 1993 after the Feds burned it down and killed 80 people. I just thought I would mention that their informant told them that they were in possession of illegal assualt rifles and were trying to purchase more of them. Having an SKS, is not illegal, its a 7 shot 7.62 39mm, same round as the AK-47, but only 7 shots and it meets U.S. hunting requirements thus the 7 round mag.. After learning of this back in 1993, I bought one for around $150.00. I understand now their selling for around $250-$300. A stamped metal cheaply made gun but very acurate at long ranges, supprisingly acurate. Really a good buy for the money.

Its sad to think of the Waco debockle was all over this hunting rifle. The feds rolled up and shot their dogs and then the shooting started. The SKS is not a weapon to be understimiated, it can be reloaded quickly with a stripper clip and if you get the hang of it its a very good weapon when pinned down under fire. Its recoil is soft and women can handle it with little discomfort.

The SKS is just a plain old ordinary semi-automatic rifle not nearly as good as the Remington 7400 but was a cheap and nasty for the Commies to produce in volume.

"Assault weapon" my Heinie a**!

I doubt that there was a Russian SKS with the Steyr lined barrel floating around Allstar's early Sunday morning. Probably a fifty dollar bargain. Yugo's are collectible but still junk.

Russian SKS with the Steyr lined barrels are quite collectible, as well. They're not junk at all.

"No class Chinese junk." The SKS was made in a number of countries. From wiki: " In total, SKS rifles were manufactured by Russia, China, Yugoslavia, Albania, North Korea, Vietnam, and East Germany (Kar. S) with limited pilot production (Model 56) in Romania and Poland (Wz49.)"

And don't forget that there really was no ban. The Gun Control Act simply defined the number of US-made parts that had to be in the "assault" weapon for it to be legal and importers and manufacturers simply complied. The so-called assault weapons ban didn't ban anything. It was political garbage.

The dreaded assault weapons were readily sold all during the "ban".

The 2nd thing that the "ban" did was "ban" magazines with the capacity of more than 10 rounds. HOWEVER, if the magazines were manufactured before 1994, they could still be sold legally. Magazine manufacturers flooded the market and their warehouses with so many high capacity (more than 10 rounds) magazines that they were sold all during the 10-year "ban".

The assault weapons "ban" did nothing. Nothing at all. It was feel good legislation to make the anti-gunners look as if they had won something. They didn't.

The SKS was not designed for hunting, not animals anyways.

Staff04:

The term was "defined" by a group of psychotic anti-gunners, led by Comrades Boxer, Feinstein and Schumer.

As the law is no longer in effect on the federal level, the bogus definition should no longer be used.

It should further be noted that the SKS was NOT included in the ban and therefore NOT defined as an "assault weapon".

Try again.

0

kneejerkreaction 6 years, 5 months ago

The fact that the Federal government used the term 'assault weapon' erroneously doesn't make their use of the word correct. They used the word for the same reason that journalists use the word, it sounds foreboding.

Getting shot by a semi-automatic hunting rifle is nowhere near as interesting for politicians or journalists as getting shot with an assault weapon.

The SKS is the long version of the Saturday Night Special. No class Chinese junk. Still deadly as hell.

The term "assault weapon" was legally defined under the '94 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, Marion. Yes, the ban on those weapons has ended, but it doesn't change the fact that the phrase was at one point legally defined.

Sloppy journalism? Maybe. "Misidentif(ied)... simply for the publicity value?" Shiny side out.

If they had poles in the parking lot that might have distracted the fighting.

"Shouldn't this have been somewhat higher given the nature of the alleged crime?"

For aggravated assault? Don't think so.

If he was a suspect in the shooting, maybe, but this article doesn't indicate that is the case.

$4000 sounds appropriate for a "threat" crime.

daddax98 6 years, 5 months ago

I sometimes (hear) journalists and anti-gunners use the term "semi-automatic machine gun" and nearly fall off my chair.

Thats the booze not the rhetoric

BTW I agree with you an SKS is not an assault weapon

0

Marion Lynn 6 years, 5 months ago

An SKS is NOT an "assault rifle".

An SKS is a fairly run of the mill and ancient semi-automatic rifle design.

The term "assault rifle" is one essentially invented by the Brady Bunch to describe the physical appearance of a broad spectrum of semi-automatic firearms. As most of you know by now, the so-called "Assault Weapons" ban created a new category of firearms based solely on appearance as the ban in no way affected the form and function of the covered firearms.

It does not surprise me that the LJW joins the other journalistic hacks in misidentifying firearms simply for the publicity value.

Militray assualt rifles all have full-automatic as well as semi-automatic capabilities.

The SKS is and has always been a semi-automatic ONLY design and does not fit the classification of an assault rifle.

I sometimes journalists and anti-gunners use the term "semi-automatic machine gun" and nearly fall off my chair.

If they'd just let those dancers strip to country music, this sort of thing wouldn't happen.

jafs 6 years, 5 months ago

Does this mean he can get out with $400? Generally, a defendant only has to come up with 10 % of the bail amount to be released.

Shouldn't this have been somewhat higher given the nature of the alleged crime?
