Mighty MANU awaits Baker

? When Baker University’s football team plays at home, anything is possible. But is a seventh straight victory at Liston Stadium probable?

The Wildcats (5-4) must knock off nationally ranked MidAmerica Nazarene (7-2) today in order to maintain a home-field dominance that includes four games this season and the last two games of 2006.

Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. in Baldwin City.

“One of our goals was to win all of our home games,” Baker coach Mike Grossner said. “We have a chance to accomplish that.”

A victory also would assure the Wildcats their first winning season since they went 9-2 back in 2000. However, the Pioneers handed Baker one of its two defeats that season and now own a seven-game win streak over the Wildcats.

MANU, ranked No. 16 in this week’s NAIA poll, boasts an offensive juggernaut ruddered by senior quarterback Matt Schneider, the Heart of America Athletic Conference leader in total offense with 2,814 yards. He has thrown 20 touchdown passes.

“They spread you out on offense and use their great speed at the skill positions,” Grossner said. “We must limit their scoring opportunities by controlling the ball on offense.”

Baker’s defense has had Jekyll-Hyde characteristics, depending on the locale. In the four home victories, BU is surrendering just 13.5 points a game. But in compiling a 1-4 road record, the ‘Cats are giving an unsightly 32.6 points a game.
