A woman and two children died in a farmhouse fire six miles north of Lawrence despite the efforts of Lawrence and area firefighters who risked their lives trying to rescue the three. The woman’s husband and a third child who had escaped had to stand by helplessly as the fire destroyed the Jefferson County home they had rented.
