As of July 1, Kansas was to have stiffer laws to deal with drunken drivers. The blood-alcohol limit was to be 0.10 in determining drunkenness, and firm enforcement was being promised by officials.

Lawrence teachers easily ratified a 1982-83 contract that boosted salaries and benefits 10.18 percent, the largest annual increase in 12 years. Under the contract, beginning teachers in the local district would receive a starting salary of $11,770, a 7.4 percent boost over the existing $10,960 base.
