Old Home Town – 100 years ago
From the Lawrence Daily World for May 27, 1907: “The Lawrence Society of Friends has purchased the building heretofore occupied by the Christian Church and will brick-veneer it, making a handsome downtown church home for the society. The purchase price was $3,500. The Christian Church has outgrown the building and has been planning for some weeks to build a much larger building. No decision has been made on the location. : Harold Burdick of Lawrence has been chosen as captain of the U.S. Naval Academy fencing team for next season. He was a member of the college championship team the past year and Navy is expected to be outstanding again under the guidance of cadet Burdick. His father is on the university law faculty. : Bicycle riders are complaining about the city’s tendency to spray the dirt streets at the wrong times, causing dirty spray to get on the bikes and the riders. They believe special hours should be set and announced for the spraying.”
