Hamas continues attacks, as Israelis target militants

Palestinian leaders meet to discuss truce but make little progress

? Israeli missile strikes hit a succession of militant targets Friday in the Gaza Strip, killing two, while Hamas fired more rockets toward Israel. Palestinian factions met to discuss a possible truce with Israel.

The factions met at the office of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Gaza but Abbas himself did not attend. Participants said it ended without agreement.

Abbas has proposed a halt to rocket attacks on Israel for a month to allow the Palestinian factions to discuss a more comprehensive truce with Israel as well as shore up a shaky cease-fire between rivals Hamas and Fatah. But his opponents have rejected the suggestion.

Israel has carried out dozens of airstrikes during the past 10 days in retaliation for stepped-up Palestinian rocket fire on southern Israeli towns near the border with Gaza. More than 40 Palestinians have been killed and the rocket barrages have severely disrupted life in the area near Gaza, sending thousands of frightened Israeli residents fleeing.

On Friday, two Hamas militants were killed and five people were injured after an Israeli missile hit their car, security officials said. The vehicle was left a charred wreck of twisted metal.

The army confirmed it had targeted militants belonging to a Hamas rocket production team who were on their way to attack Israel.

Israeli airstrikes early today hit two Hamas locations in Gaza near the home of Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, Palestinian security officials said.

The army confirmed the attacks in the Shati refugee camp but stressed that Haniyeh himself was not a target. No one was injured in the airstrikes, which left two large craters, smashed surrounding windows and cut electricity in the heavily crowded camp.

It was the second day in a row in which the army targeted locations near Haniyeh’s home.

Palestinian militants also fired at least six rockets toward Israel, one of which landed on a home in the border town of Sderot, lightly injuring three people, the army said. Palestinian militants have fired hundreds of rockets toward Sderot and an Israeli woman was killed by a rocket Monday.

“Israel will carry out the requisite defensive measures in order to prevent these Hamas rocket attacks and to allow Israelis to live in peace and without fear of a rocket smashing into their home,” said David Baker, an Israeli government spokesman.

On Thursday, an airstrike hit a hut in the refugee camp where Haniyeh lives. No one was hurt in that attack, which Israel said targeted an unspecified structure used by Hamas.

Haniyeh stayed away from public prayers Friday, even though Israel denied he was a target of the missile fired at the refugee camp just before midnight Thursday.

Abu Obeida, a spokesman for the Hamas military wing, said a truce with Israel was a “nonstarter” and pledged to continue attacking Israel.

“We call on Abu Mazen not to play the role of mediator between the resistance and the occupation,” he said, referring to Abbas by his nickname.

Separately, Gaza’s border crossing with Egypt was reopened Friday after Israel relaxed a security alert that kept it closed 12 days.
