Roland Ross, Perry, will celebrate his 90th birthday with a reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. June 3 at Perry United Methodist Church. Everyone is invited to join his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at the celebration.

¢The Kansas University Honors Program recognized graduating seniors during a ceremony May 19. The event honored students who completed the University Honors Program and the University Scholars Program.

Area students who completed both programs include Karen Bentley, Rachael Costello, Anne McEnroe and Lucas Thompson, all of Lawrence; and Andrew Becker, Tonganoxie. Students who completed the honors program include Hilda Audardottir-Goulay, Brielyn Dickerson, Sean Hill, Jameelah Lang, Shannon Layman, Jared Ostermann, Mallory Richardson, Joshua Stewart, Matthew Thompson and Rebekah Zemansky, all of Lawrence; and Cailinn Drouin, Linwood.

¢Paul and Callie Shultz Castro, Shawnee, announce the birth of their daughter, Mia Lynn Castro, born March 28, 2007, in Overland Park. Maternal grandparents are Lynn Shultz and Jim and Mary Shultz, all of Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Donna and Louis Castro, Kansas City, Kan. Great-grandparents are Loyd and Colleen Wilson, Topeka.

¢Steven Russell and Jody Mraz-Russell, San Diego, announce the birth of their daughter, Kerin Mae Russell, born April 30, 2007, in San Diego.

Maternal grandparents are Joe and Lliani Mraz, Santa Fe, N.M. Paternal grandparents are Vern and Ila Russell, Lawrence. Great-grandparents are Donald Collins, El Paso, Texas; Dorothy Mraz, Chicago; and Anna Mae Andersen and Kathryn Russell, both of Baldwin City.

¢Quintin and Jennifer Harris, Lawrence, announce the birth of twin sons, Jack Quintin Harris and Finnegan Dennis Harris, born May 9, 2007, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

They have a brother, Keegan, 3.

¢The Eudora High School Alumni Association’s banquet and yearly meeting will be June 3 in the commons area at Eudora High School, 2203 Church St.

Registration begins at noon. The covered-dish dinner will start at 12:30 p.m., followed by the business meeting. The banquet is open to all graduates of Eudora High School. Special recognition will be given to the Class of 1957. Those planning to attend are asked to bring their own table service. Coffee and tea will be provided.

¢Kelsey Taylor, a student at Central Junior High School, received the inaugural Service Above Self award from the Lawrence Central Rotary Club on Tuesday. Kelsey also received $150. Teachers nominated students for the award, which honors a student who has demonstrated exemplary humanitarian service, with an emphasis on volunteer efforts and active involvement in helping others.

¢Alex Roberts, Kansas City, Mo., has been selected for the Pre-Doctoral Honors Oral Surgery Program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s School of Dentistry. Roberts is among eight honorees selected from his fourth-year dental class. He is a 1999 graduate of Free State High School and a 2003 graduate of Kansas State University.

¢Several area residents were inducted into Kansas University’s chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society May 19 at the Kansas Union. The students include Karen Bentley, Rachael Costello, Derek Korte, John Kuhn, Zachary Puckett, Mallory Richardson, Kara Roelofs, Sarah Sims, Joshua Stewart and Anne Weltmer, all of Lawrence; and John Nelson, Linwood. Election to Phi Beta Kappa recognizes a student’s high academic achievement while pursuing a broad and substantive liberal arts curriculum.

¢Anne McEnroe and Shannon Layman, both of Lawrence, received awards for their presentations at Kansas University’s 10th annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, conducted April 14 in the Kansas Union. McEnroe won a General Interest Contribution Award and received $75. Her research project was “You Are What You Read: The Evolution of St. Augustine’s Relationship with Virgil.” Layman received a $50 paper session award. Her project was “Change Deafness with a Musical Stimulus.”

Also, Holly Storkel, associate professor of speech-language-hearing, was the first recipient of the K. Barbara Schowen Undergraduate Research Mentor Award and received $1,000 to use for research.

¢Kansas University’s department of political science honored top students at its annual Pi Sigma Alpha initiation and awards banquet, conducted April 19 at the Kansas Union. Lawrence students who were honored include Hilda Audardottir-Goulay, Pi Sigma Alpha inductee and Pi Sigma Alpha Faculty Award; Ryan Gibb, Walter Thompson Scholarship; John Hubbard, Pi Sigma Alpha inductee and Walter Thompson Scholarship; Christopher B. Kroh, Pi Sigma Alpha Study Abroad award and Walter Thompson Scholarship; Benjamin W. Lampe, Walter Thompson Scholarship; Alana Querze, Walter Thompson Scholarship; James W. Stoutenborough, Walter Thompson Scholarship; Lucas Thompson, Pi Sigma Alpha inductee; and Grant Wille, Gustafson Scholarship. Jacob Longaker, De Soto, received a Pi Sigma Alpha Study Abroad award.

¢Kathryn Loyd and Christopher Swain, both Kansas University students from Lawrence, were initiated into Mortar Board, a senior honor society, April 15 at the Kansas Union. Loyd is studying political science, and Swain is pursuing an accounting degree. Both are graduates of Lawrence High School.

¢Chad Hays, Uniontown, was a valedictorian for the Class of 2007 at Uniontown High School, near Fort Scott. His father, Frank Hays, and stepmother, Patty Hays, reside in Lawrence.

¢Elisabeth Lyman, Ottawa, and Brandy Jones, Perry, were recognized for achieving a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher at Emporia State University. They were honored at the 23rd annual Teachers College Honors Banquet May 4.

¢The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Kansas University honored its top students April 24 at the Kansas Union. Students from Lawrence who were recognized include Karen Bentley, Dana Leibengood Public Relations Award; Melissa Byrd, Gerald Funk Writing Award; Heidi Fedak, Calder Pickett Research Award; and Anne Weltmer, Walter Ewert Reporting Award.
