Suspect sought in robbery at grocery store bank branch

Bank employees at Capital City Bank talk with Lawrence Police officers after a black male with a gray hooded sweat shirt entered the Hy-Vee store at 4000 west 6th shortly before 2 p.m. and demanded money from the teller at Capital City Bank. The robber walked away with a undisclosed amount.

While shoppers browsed the aisles of a Lawrence grocery store Thursday afternoon, a man robbed a branch bank near the store’s entrance.

Lawrence police are looking for a man who walked up to the counter at Capital City Bank inside Hy-Vee, 4000 W. Sixth St., and demanded money.

“They gave it to him,” Lawrence Police Capt. Dan Affalter said of the bank’s employees.

No weapon was displayed, he said. The robber took off on foot heading south from the store, Affalter said. It was not known whether the man got into a vehicle, he said.

Surveillance cameras are in place at the bank, and police were planning to review the video, Affalter said. The robbery occurred shortly before 2 p.m.

Police are asking for the public’s help in finding the suspect. Affalter gave this description: a black man in his 20s wearing a white T-shirt sticking out under a gray hooded sweatshirt. He wore medium gray pants with a draw string in front. He also wore a black ball cap with white letters on it and white tennis shoes. He was a 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighed about 150 pounds.

The description of a hooded sweatshirt is similar to what suspects have worn in other business robberies in recent months, but Affalter said it was too early to tell whether it might be the same suspect.

Police ask that anyone with information about the robbery call investigators at 830-7430 or after-hours police dispatchers at 832-7509, 843-TIPS.
