Memorial Day gets earlier every year

The summer movie season used to begin with summer. Solstice and all that. But after the mega-success of “Jaws” in 1975, Hollywood moved the summer season up to Memorial Day. And now Hollywood can’t even wait until Memorial Day to launch some of its biggest movies. Some day, in a not-too-distant future, “Shrek XXXVII” will open on Groundhog Day.

Television takes the start of the Memorial Day weekend in stride – or, rather, with repeats. Unless, of course, you count “National Bingo Night” (8 p.m., ABC). As expected, the debut of this series last week did not generate much excitement. What’s next, “Celebrity Mahjong”? “So You Think You Can Shuffleboard”? “Bobbing for Apples with Bobby Flay”?

¢ Tonight marks the 15th anniversary of Jay Leno’s ascension to host of “The Tonight Show” (10:35 p.m., NBC). While it has receded into the mists of ancient TV history, the behind-the-scenes intrigue and infighting over who would succeed Johnny Carson as “Tonight Show” host inspired the best-selling book “The Late Shift” by Bill Carter. It was made into a 1996 HBO film of the same name starring Daniel Roebuck (“Lost,” “River’s Edge”) as Leno and John Michael Higgins (“Arrested Development”) as his late-night rival, David Letterman.

Leno’s guests tonight include Dennis Miller, Ross the Intern and Dwight Yoakam.

¢ Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson hosts the 2007 Taurus World Stunt Awards (9:30 p.m., AMC). Among others, Taurus will honor Gerard Butler, star of “300,” with the Action Movie Star of the Year Award. While playing King Leonidas, Butler did many of his own stunts.

¢ The phenomenon of mindless eating takes center stage on “20/20” (9 p.m., ABC). John Stossel interviews food science professor Brian Wansink, who argues that we are no longer eating out of hunger but because of visual cues.

On a similar theme, “20/20” also looks at the new trend in premium vodkas. Do they really taste better? Or are we attracted to their fancy bottles? A third segment examines an adventure right out of “The Deadliest Catch.”

Tonight’s other highlights

¢ Angelina Jolie stars in the 2001 adventure “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” (7 p.m., Fox).
