City leaders are continuing to urge people to stay out of a west Lawrence stream that was the site of a large sewer line break last week.

The stream, which is unnamed, starts south of Bob Billings Parkway and west of Crestline Drive on Kansas University’s West Campus. The stream runs south, parallel to Kasold Drive, crossing under Clinton Parkway just east of Kasold Drive. The stream remains east of Kasold Drive until it crosses under Kasold north of 31st Street. It then enters Yankee Tank Creek.

The city is advising people and pets to stay out of the stream until further notice. Jeanette Klamm, a spokeswoman with the city’s Utilities Department, said contamination levels in the creek were going down, but had not dropped as quickly as anticipated.

Klamm said the city regularly tests the creek and shares results with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Klamm said she expected the creek advisory would be in place for only a few more days.

Klamm said the sewer line broke last week as a result of the heavy rains that caused a bank of the creek to collapse and sheer the buried sewer line. The line has been fixed, and city crews have a pump in the creek that is pumping contaminated water into the sewer system.
