City costs

To the editor:

With regard to budget cuts, it is no wonder the city has no money. Parking continues to be free downtown at night. Why aren’t the meters on Massachusetts required to be paid parking?

Sunday, May 20, at 3 a.m., five police cars were again at the closing of Last Call. Why do we have a City Commission that continues to provide free security for the bars closing around town? This is at the point of ridiculous and an expense that should start being paid for by the bar owners. If a business has a false alarm, the business is charged a fine.

Why shorten the hours at the swimming pool, when instead the fee could be raised a quarter. And for that matter, quit giving reductions to city employees for pool passes and parks and recreation programs. They can pay the full price until the City Commission and the city manager get their spending in hand.

A cut in maintenance at the public library won’t be noticed. The place is hardly maintained now. For over seven months, the south entrance has been a disgrace. Those newspaper racks look like they came from a landfill. I cannot believe that the janitorial staff at the library doesn’t own a broom and dustpan and likewise those who have racks for their newspapers don’t take pride in their displays.

Oh well, business as usual. Just a matter of time before we read that the commission has requested another study or hired a consultant at how much?
