Society, military

To the editor:

This is a comment on “Growing hatred” by Anne Haehl (Public Forum, May 9).

Apparently we both read the same article. Looking back in current history, this was also a problem in Vietnam, which was my war. I spent 20 years in the U.S. Army and in my opinion the military is a product of society. I am not sure if leaving Iraq yesterday would solve this problem. For any change to take place, society will need to take a hard look at itself and make the necessary changes in society’s attitude toward reasons for death.
