Grocery goodies

Frankie Jarrow tends to the register at Hy-Vee during the 5 p.m. rush hour.

Everyone at the grocery at 5 p.m. is in a hurry.

The businesswoman on her way home from work just wants to stop in and pick up some necessities for that night’s dinner. The dad just wants to check everything off the list and get the squirming toddler home.

Most stop by the Hy-Vee on Sixth Street in hopes of procuring the food that’s needed for the night’s meal.

Carolyn Berry, however, is planning ahead. She’s getting what she needs to prepare Mother’s Day dinner.

The list includes pork roast and mashed potatoes.

“It’s actually for my mom, even though I am a mom,” she says as she loads supplies into the back of her SUV.

Back inside, little girls are doing spins in the middle of the aisle while their parents sort through a bin of candy reduced for sale. A couple haggle over brand and price of spaghetti sauce.

Eventually, they’ll all wind up at the front of the store to make one final decision before they head home.

Paper or plastic.
