Ex-Jayhawk Metcalf sent down by Rangers

? The Texas Rangers activated outfielder Frank Catalanotto from the 15-day disabled list Monday and sent infielder Travis Metcalf back to Double-A Frisco.

Metcalf, a former Kansas University standout, was 0-for-2 in two games after getting called up from Frisco on Friday when third baseman Hank Blalock was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome, which affects the nerves that pass through the shoulder into the neck.

Metcalf went 0-for-2 on Saturday, then drew a walk in pinch-hitting duties on Sunday.

Before the brief call-up, Metcalf had been hitting .294 with 11 doubles, six home runs and 25 RBIs for Frisco.

With Metcalf’s demotion, only one former Jayhawk is playing in the major leagues – Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Tom Gorzelanny, who was Metcalf’s teammate at Kansas in 2002.
