Obsessive-Composting Disorder – By Priscilla McKinney

Obsessive-Composting Disorder

I’m a closet wastologist,

post-use conservationist,

recycler of everything

par excellence.

In the lab of my mind,

I am searching to find

all possible means

to make our world clean

and imbue corporations

with conscience.

There will be no depletion

of forests or trees, nor

continued dependence

on oil, or coal;

sun- and wind-driven engines

will sustain and transport us

on durable roads

with no chuckholes.

Cars and trucks will not crash

nor make fumes or exhaust;

they, like lightbulbs, batteries,

and all hard goods will last.

Things for use only once

will degrade or refine:

diapers, packaging, junkmail

will be things of the past.

From leftover styrofoam,

jar lids and odd plastics,

I’ll make holiday ornaments

or artwork fantastic.

My current research

is perhaps the most hard:

how to recycle huge piles

of used credit cards!

I work daily and fast

in my “save-the-world” wars

so the next generation,

faced with overpopulation,

pollution, global warming,

and enviro-crises as alarming,

won’t have to make

their home on Mars.
