Red Cross directing donations to other tornado-related charities

? The American Red Cross announced Friday that it had received enough funds for its mission in helping the recovery from the Greensburg tornado.

But Red Cross officials are urging people to continue donating to other charities and nonprofit organizations that are raising funds for other storm recovery efforts.

“There are still many charities fundraising for the Kansas disaster, but the Red Cross has raised enough so that people can direct their funds elsewhere,” said Sarah Marchetti, a spokeswoman for the Red Cross.

The Red Cross raised $1.4 million in response to tornadoes and flooding that hit Kansas on May 4.

The tornado in Greensburg killed 10 and destroyed most of the houses and buildings in the town of 1,400 people.

The Red Cross dispatched 635 relief workers – 95 percent of them volunteers – to ensure that survivors had shelter, food, comfort and essentials, officials said.

Survivors received counseling, basic health care and family connecting services. The Red Cross provided more than 1,000 overnight stays in eight shelters, plus more than 50,000 meals and snacks.

Many donations remain in “pledge” form and have been incorporated into funds available for the relief effort, the Red Cross said. Marchetti said it is important for supporters to fulfill their pledged gifts.
