Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for May 19, 1907: “Officers picked up J.W. Mitten for swindling charges. He had been representing a novel fence machine that did not work as he had claimed and several had paid him money and complained. Mitten has been bound over for trial after several complaints. : The carnival group quartered here is in hot water, with several people filing claims against various operations they say were tainted. : Traveling men are telling how all saloons and joints have been closed by a crackdown in Wichita, saying they have to get their liquor from bootleggers, who charge enormous sums. : Charles Scott, congressman from our Second District, gave talks at the university on the Panama Canal and the job it entails. He stressed how difficult it is. : The university Junior Prom proved to be one of the most important events in school history when for the first time there was dancing on the floor of the new gymnasium that was opened specially for this occasion. More than 400 were able to dance at one time on the new flooring. Decorations were beautiful.”
