From the Lawrence Daily World for May 18, 1907: “The jury in the long-running case against John Lewis for the murder of Houston McNees returned a verdict of guilty of manslaughter in the second degree. The penalty is to be three to five years in prison but Lewis’ lawyers will file a motion for a new trial. : Local women are doing well. While farmers are plagued by green bugs, potato bugs and the like we hear of no bed bugs in our community, which means housekeepers must be quite effective. : Ottawa University commencement was held up when classmates refused to go through ceremonies until a fellow student who had been excluded from the proceedings was included. Apparently his name had been stricken from the list due to bad deportment, but fellow students forced the issue.”
