Officer hospitalized after being hit by car

A Lawrence police officer was taken Thursday night to Lawrence Memorial Hospital after being struck by a vehicle. Other officers report that he is in good condition.

Officer Sutagee Anglin had completed a call near West 24th Street and Murphy Drive, near Molly McGee’s, about 9:40 p.m. when a pickup truck struck him from behind, pushing him onto the hood of his patrol car.

“He never heard anything; he never saw anything,” Sgt. Mark Warren said. “All the sudden there was this big smack in the back.”

A man was in handcuffs and seated in a patrol car Thursday night at the collision scene, but it was unclear whether he was taken to jail.

Warren said that as of Thursday evening the cause of the incident had not been established.

“We have no reason to believe it was anything other than an accident,” he said.

The investigation was ongoing Thursday night.
