KU golfers eighth after opening round

? Kansas University’s men’s golf team finished tied for eighth place after the first round of the NCAA Central Regional at the Rich Harvest Farms golf course.

The Jayhawks, who were deadlocked with Lamar and Western Illinois, carded a 25-over-par 313 during the opening round while contending with windy and cold conditions.

The top 10 teams will advance to the NCAA championships.

The Jayhawks were led by their senior duo of Gary Woodland and Tyler Docking.

Woodland recorded two birdies en route to his opening-round score of 76 and is tied for 25th place. Docking opened the tournament with a score of 77 and is tied for 35th.

Junior Joey Mundy fired an opening-round 78 to tie for 43rd. Mundy closed out his round with a birdie.

Senior Barrett Martens shot an opening-round 82 to finish tied for 87th. Sophomore Walt Koelbel shot a 92 and is in 137th.

“The important part about today was that we are very much still in contention, and hopefully this was our worst round of the tournament and we got it out of the way early,” KU coach Ross Randall said.

“We had some good stretches and some bad stretches during our round today,” he added. “Gary played a pretty steady round for us, but overall we didn’t finish the rounds as well as would have liked.”

The 33-team, three-round tournament continues today. KU will tee off at 12:20 p.m.
