City warns of sewage in westside creek

City leaders on Thursday urged people to stay out of a west Lawrence stream after untreated sewage flowed into it following a sewer line break.

The stream, which is unnamed, starts south of Bob Billings Parkway and west of Crestline Drive on Kansas University’s West Campus. The stream runs south, parallel to Kasold Drive, crossing under Clinton Parkway just east of Kasold Drive. The stream remains east of Kasold Drive until crosses under Kasold north of 31st Street. It then enters Yankee Tank Creek.

The city is urging residents, and their pets, to stay out of the stream until at least Sunday. City leaders said the Kansas Department of Health and Environment had been contacted.

The broken line has been successfully plugged by city crews, which have stopped further leaks into the creek. Crews are working to replace the line and are flushing the creek with clean, treated water.

A city spokeswoman said KDHE leaders have asked the city to conduct tests on the water upstream and downstream from the break, which occurred near Westbrooke Street and Bob Billings Parkway. The city hasn’t been able to determine yet how many gallons of sewage flowed into the creek.
