Broken line dumps sewage into stream

The city is urging residents, and pets, to stay out of the stream until at least Sunday.

City leaders are urging people to stay out of a West Lawrence stream after a sewer line break has allowed untreated sewage to enter the stream.

The stream, which is unnamed, starts south of 15th Street and west of Crystalline Drive on Kansas University’s West Campus. The stream runs south, parallel to Kasold Drive, crossing under 23rd Street, just east of Kasold Drive. The stream remains east of Kasold Drive. The stream crosses under Kasold north of 31st Street. The stream enters the Yankee Tank Creek.

The city is urging residents, and pets, to stay out of the stream until at least Sunday. City leaders said the appropriate representatives from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment have been contacted.

The broken line has been successfully plugged by city crews, which has stopped further leakage into the creek. Crews are working to replace the line, and also are flushing the creek with clean, treated water.
