Battery charges filed in beating outside club

Two men were arrested by Lawrence police early Sunday for allegedly kicking and hitting a man found lying on the ground outside a nightclub.

Officers were called shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday to Club Axis, 821 Iowa, where they found about 50 people standing in the parking lot, according to a police report. The victim, a 20-year-old Lawrence man, was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

On Monday, Tony Boutphavong, 23, of Kansas City, Kan., and Phonexay Sayphanya, 24, of Lawrence, were each charged with one count of aggravated battery. They were being held at the Douglas County Jail with their bonds set at $25,000.

Sayphanya also is wanted on a warrant in Denton County, Texas, for failure to appear in court on a charge of possession of a controlled substance. He is being held on a second $25,000 bond for that warrant.

Sayphanya and Boutphavong are scheduled to appear next week in Douglas County District Court, where a preliminary hearing will be set.
